Improve Roads with Measure I

Before you head to the polls on November 7, please take some time to learn about Measure I and how it will benefit us all.   Measure I, Safe Roads for Kern County, is a ½% sales tax that will provide local matching funds so Kern County can qualify for hundreds of millions of dollars in additional funding from state and federal highway programs.  These are dollars that currently go to other counties with such programs already in place.  Los Angeles County is one of the dozen and a half counties that currently shares the pool of funds designated for self-help counties - money that you and I have already paid through our taxes.  We need to join the ranks of self-help counties and get our fair share of road improvement funds.

Measure I was developed after many public hearings and input over several years from Kern county communities.  There are safeguards that prevent the misuse or redirection of its funds.  Local Measure I projects include in part, new lanes for Route 202 and Valley Blvd. and on-off ramps at 58 and Dennison. There are provisions for bike lanes and senior transportation, as well.  We all use these roads.  They are already under-capacity, and our community is quickly expanding.  Current sources of road funds do not meet the needs to build and repair our roads here in Tehachapi and Kern County.

The website at kernmeasureI.com provides excellent information to answer your questions about Measure I and to make an informed decision.   There you will find the history, projects, details and an impressive list of endorsements.  Also, the full text of the ordinance is available at www.saferoadskern.org.

We cannot delay any longer.  Kern County needs safe roads now.  We need Measure I.

Measure I is a sneak attack on working peoples wallets, and is a give away to those that do not work for it. In short it is a plan for theft. {New Paragraph} It is an economic fact that the value of any improvements to infrastructure will add to the land rents in the local areas. This is because only those who are using local land can enjoy those improvements. So the local land owners essentially command that value. And they will be able to raise their rents and selling prices to completely capture all the gain. Working men may see the better road but when they buy a home or rent they will also be paying for it. {New Paragraph} And that is how the theft works, local workers are taxed on the money they spend, and then they are charged again for rents and land prices. The land owners without any effort get to pocket the entire double dip from the workers pocket. {New Paragraph} To prevent this means of sneaky theft, workers should never vote to build infrastructure with other then land taxes Then and only then will the real net benefactors be paying for what they get. There are enough poor people already in Kern County, with poverty levels that exceed Appalachia. They don’t need this kind of theft, and they don’t need any projects that are funded by the most regressive of all taxes, namely sales tax. I would rather drive on dirt then steal any more money from the poor. {New Paragraph} Vote no on theft, vote no on measure I.
