This is too small to read so don't click on Larger View. Instead, click on the bottom that reads: Public Forum.doc as it is written in MS-Word and then click on OPEN and it will be large enough to read. Thanks and I will be interested to see how many people agree with this position. I know I DO!

The article is too small to read..Drug testing? Are we also willing to pay the high cost of a then needed mandatory stay at a rehabilitation center for the people who do not pass the drug test? Otherwise what good will it do? We cannot force Americans to be homeless. Most drug addicts have children. Only 2% of our federal budget goes to welfare services anyway. It's not like much of the taxes we pay go to welfare to begin with, most goes to Defense, Social Security and Medicare. Although, I will do anything to get people off of drugs so that they can have a good life like the rest of us.  Although, I don't think it would be fair to those welfare recipients that are not on drugs and are women who have been dumped by the father of their children and are trying to simply raise their children with some dignity.. 3/4 of the people on welfare are indeed single women with children.

How about this....if they test positive for drugs, they can use thier medi-cal to enter a manditory outpatient treatment program.  Also if they test positive the county can mandate them to have their rent and utilities deducted directly from their welfare benefits in order for their children to have a place to live, instead of just giving them $ to spend on drugs.  I was a woman who was dumped by the father of my children who was also a drug addict.  Did i spend my welfare check on drugs and not on rent and bills??? YES.  You are correct it is no life to have.  But we have choices and obligations to our children.  If the county would have deducted my rent directly from my benefit check my kids would have had a safe place to be.

Sparks says: That works for me Jewels as long as the drug testing is not mandatory.

I partially agree with Sparks here. I think drug testing would cost A LOT of money. Also with all the resources out there a determined addict can pass a drug test. Addicts are doing it everyday. However, Jewels started a blog about this and in it she suggested that some of the money go directly to pay rent and utilities. Now that is a GOOD idea IMO.

The subject isn't a matter of rocket science. If the test were employed, it would serve as a deterrent to potential welfare fraud, and would weed-out some of the existing fraud. "Political-correctness"? "Discrimination" against a target group? No, it's discrimination against "persons committing welfare fraud", and the problem is so prolific, that the procedure is worth it to ferret out the generational criminals.

Thus, in essense you are saying ALL welfare recipients are drug users and all should be subjected to drug testing. I believe a rocket scientist would disagree with you.   Who will we force to take a test next?  Maybe we should we have a country wide mandatory test on everyone. Lie dectector tests too; let's see who does drugs, let's see who the tax evaders are, and let's see who the bigots are in America. Let's get the real outlaws. Let's test big corporations, etc. etc. etc.

Sparks, I thought you were a reasonable person. Certainly, not ALL welfare recipients are drug users any more than ALL employees who receive drug testing are drug users. Also, you are mistaken about the cost of drug testing. The average cost is only $15.00 per person and that's a LOT less than we have to pay for them to buy their drugs with OUR money!

I am a reasonable person. It's not the drug testing that will cost the most money, it is the mandatory rehab stay after a failed drug test (that won't help the addict at all) that will cost US a lot of money, The drug addicts will continue to stay on welfare and continue to go to a costly rehab again and again and again.  Believe me I know I have worked at a rehab for years.  If they stop taking welfare checks altogether to avoid rehab, they will resort to crime. Thus our crime rate will go up, and if we are lucky enough to catch them, we will pay for their stay in jail while we continue paying for their families to live on welfare. Drug addicts costs us money one way or another, we will always pay for their shelter, either in rehab, jail, or on welfare. You would be amazed at how many people that come from middle class homes become addicted to drugs and then end up on welfare.  The poor do not become addicts, the addicts become poor.  People who are Forced to stay at rehab centers rarely recover.   Only people who are willing to quit recover.  Thus it is a huge waste of money and precious time that we could be spending on people who really want to quit.  Although, if a bill ever passes that allows drug testing of people on welfare, may I suggest you run out and invest in rehab centers because business will be BOOMING!!!   Welfare is the way we Americans take care of our mentally ill and people with the "disease" of alcholism and drug abuse. Because we simply do NOT want to pay more for expensive rehabilitation.  I personally would not mind paying more to help them, but my experience has been that we can only help those who want help.

P.S. I voted against drug testing employees as well.  Are you for the drug testing of employees?
