The Bear Valley Springs Equestrian 4-H Club is a new horse group for all area young people ages 7 to16-years-old. Joi-Ashli Gibbs is heading this organization and notes that participants can have any degree of Western riding experience, but must be willing to learn more.

Activities will include horse training techniques from the ground and under saddle as well as hoof care and farrier techniques. All riders will learn how to compete in all show classes and will do local competitions as well as 4-H sanctioned shows.

Meetings will begin in January and will be held on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Saturday activities will take place one to two times a month as weather permits. For more information contact Gibbs at 821-1377.

For those who might have missed all the excitement of the horse exhibits, sales and clinics in Las Vegas this past December, there are a few more shows coming up for the horse enthusiast.

The Seventh Annual Equine Affaire takes place at the Pomona Fairplex from Feb. 1 through 4. There will be more than 50 training clinics in the covered and outdoor arenas including Chris Cox (general training), David Lichman (Parelli trainer), Ted Robinson (reining) Kristie Peterson (barrels) and Scot Hansen (mounted police training).

The Craig Cameron trailering clinic on Feb. 1 is looking for participants for the loading clinic. If you have a horse that is a problem loader please contact Betsy Battista at 740.845.0085 ext. 117.

In addition to the clinics there will also be seminars and demonstrations. The Equine Affaire also hosts one of the largest trade shows, full of horse-related equipment, tack, apparel and other stuff. For more detailed information visit www.equineaffaire.com or call 740.845.0085.

The Equine Experience at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles is March 30 to April 1. It will include clinicians, ranch horse competition, Kids Day, shopping and dancing. It also has a select sale of trail, rope and ranch horses, along with broodmares and foals. Some of the shows include the Cowboy Mounted Shooting, where on horseback riders shot at targets over a time-course; the Jump Off, where horses and riders must jump over five obstacles over a short distance, and the Ranch Horse Showdown. For more information, click www.equineexperience.net or call (805)237-0011.

The Kern County Board of Supervisors recently decided not to approve measures A-1, RS and RF. These issues would have increased the amount of land required for livestock. Among the pressing issue for horse owners was increasing land space per horse from one-third to one-half acre. For more information on these issues contact, saveouranimals@earthlink.net.

ETI Corrals 14 and 10 are hosting a Trail Drive and Scavenger Hunt on Jan. 6 at 10 a.m. at the Moonraker Ranch on Backus Rd. in Mojave. The ride will be over two different, mostly flat courses- North course (about five miles), South course (5-6 miles) or combined North and South courses. Riders are requested to bring something for a pot-luck lunch. The cost is $8 for non-ETI members. For more information contact Katie Christman at 824-2609.
