Funeral services were held and a Mass of Resurrection was celebrated at St. Malachy Catholic Church on Jan. 22 for local resident Esther Gracey Larock, who passed away on Jan. 17 after a lingering illness.
Esther was born in Raymond, S.D., on July 6, 1921, to Queenie and Doyle Gracey. She grew up in Oak Park, Ill., and graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1940.
She met Leo W. Larock of Manitoba, Canada, and they were married on Sept. 28, 1941. The couple began their marriage in Chicago but Esther was soon to be the wife of a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.
A son, Leo Walter Larock, Jr., was born in Canada in 1944 during this time.
The couple spent some years in the real estate business in Palm Springs and San Clemente. She also engaged in a business of her own, but preferred being a stay-at-home mom. Her son, Leo Larock, Jr. was killed in his 19th year in an automobile accident.
She is survived by a brother, Doyle Gracey, of Tehachapi and a sister, Mary Whittington, of Goodnight, Texas, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Leo Larock, Sr.; son, Leo Larock, Jr.; her parents, Doyle and Queenie Gracey, of Des Moines, Iowa; and sisters, Meyrlin Tuttle and Ruby McCarl, also of Des Moines.
Officiating at the Mass of Resurrection was Esther’s nephew, Father John Gracey of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bishop. She was interred in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Orange.
Wood Family Funeral Services handles the arrangements.
