Dental health for horses
February has been designated National Dental Health Month for horses. It's important that you give routine dental care to your horse. Because of our horses' domesticated lifestyles, they are sometimes faced with situations that they would not encounter in their natural environments. These situations can affect their dental health. Horses are grazing animals, designed to forage 10-12 hours a day. When stabled they lose free-choice grazing, their diet is supplemented with grain and their feeding positions are sometimes elevated. All of these factors can impact tooth and jaw function. Feeding your horse his hay on the ground and his grain from a ground feeder can help reduce uneven wear and the resulting painful hooks. These hooks may make him unwilling to put a bit in this mouth or be sloppy when he eats. So every so often have our vet or equine dentist check your horse's teeth.
Don't forget, if you have any information to report on the horse community such as upcoming events, clinics, raffles or you've won an award, please contact Jill at 823-1114, FAX 823-1115, e-mail jillbn@yahoo.com, or drop material off at the Tehachapi News.
