Leading up to the game, the signs pointed to a passing of the torch for league supremacy, but the Lady Warriors weren’t ready to give up their mountain top without a fight.
The three-time defending league champion Warriors were facing off against an undefeated Arvin squad that had already dispatched Tehachapi earlier in the season. Arvin was also the hottest team in the Central Section with five-straight wins and a league leading 66 points scored per game.
The stage was set, and in the end, Tehachapi closed the curtain with brilliant defensive effort and a 52-43 upset win.
“Coming into the game we knew their point-scoring was a huge factor,” said Warrior guard Katie Avila. “We’ve been preparing for Arvin since the last game that we played them, and defensively Kasie (Muro) stepped up against their best player and we just played awesome.”
In the previous two contests leading up to the game against Arvin (14-11; 5-1 SSL), the Lady Warriors failed to break the 40-point mark offensively. Yet, Tehachapi (17-3; 5-1 SSL) still won both games, with an impressive average of only 29.5 points relinquished.
Defense was the emphasis, particularly one that could thwart the Lady Bear perimeter attack.
“We focused in on their three-point shooting,” added Avila. “It was all-around a great team effort, we love to pass it around and work together.”
Avila was Tehachapi’s brightest star on the night, dropping a game-high 21 points, while also collecting 15 rebounds. Ashley Asoau also had a big night in the paint, collecting 13 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Donna Crowley also had eight boards and four points, while Kasie Muro chipped in with five points.
“We felt like this was the championship,” Avila said. “We would be honored to share the SSL (title) with Arvin if it ends up that way. They’re an awesome team and it was a great game.”
Tehachapi will play this week in two home contests, with the first game a Wednesday meeting against Shafter (7 p.m.) and the second game a Friday clash with Taft at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Braves snapped a two-game losing streak by winning a pair of games this week against Wasco and Arvin.
Leading the way last Tuesday against Wasco was Michelle Durr, who helped Tehachapi to a 49-27 win with 21 points. Also getting into the scoring mix was Michelle Baxter with eight points, Chrissy Whittman with seven points, Alyssa Cowee and Persephonie Devereaux with five points each, and Hannah Ricker with three points.
Against Arvin, the Lady Braves won a 40-33 decision behind 10 points scored by Michelle Baxter, eight points by Chrissy Whittman, and six points by Michelle Durr. Hannah Ricker, Persephonie Devereaux, Brooke Gotherick, Alyssa Cowee, and McKenna Romero all helped contribute with 16 points combined.
The Braves will be in action at home against Shafter (Wednesday) and Taft (Friday) this week, with 5:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. start times, respectively.
