The 6th annual Kern River Run, scheduled for March 24 at the Kern River Park, east of Lake Ming, will benefit the Kern County Fire Prevention and Public Education Department.
According to Captain Doug Johnston of the KCFD, since it’s inception in 2002, the race has helped to raise more than $22,000 for the department, specifically for fire safety trailers used to teach children how to safely respond in the event of a fire in the home.
“The fire safety trailer simulator creates and atmosphere similar to what might be experienced in a house fire so the children can learn about staying low and escaping without injury,” stated a press released issued by Johnston.
The race includes a 5K, 10 and 20 mile runs, as well as a “Super Aid Station Competition.”
In addition to offering cups of water to runners, aid stations also offer a variety of munchies, beverages and entertainment. There will be between three and five of these stations on the 10 and 20 mile courses.
Aid station volunteers are hoping to earn votes in a competition all their own, to be held at the finish line, when runners will be asked to vote for their favorite. Runners are encouraged to vote with the same enthusiasm that the volunteers display on the course.
The Bakersfield Track Club hosts the annual the event, along with the aid of corporate and local business sponsors. Johnston, who is also the club’s President said that the event is a public and family event.
“We have quite a few people who participate who are firefighters,” Johnston said, emphasizing that the run is not a firefighter competition, but a public running event that will benefit the KCFD.
Pre-registration is encouraged online at www.bakersfieldtrackclub.com or active.com. Entry fees include a pancake breakfast on race day, t-shirts and finisher’s medals. For registration fees and more information call Doug Johnston at 203-4196 or Regina Arriaga at 391-7080.
