Gallery ‘n’ Gifts will have a special showing  featuring the decorated egg.  The ancient rite of decorating eggs has been used for millennia to celebrate the arrival of Spring. The Easter egg of today had its beginning in the Druidic traditions of celebrating the arrival of Spring with brightly colored eggs. The egg has long been used as a symbol of fertility and life’s unending cycle. The time honored practice of decorating and giving eggs evolved from the magical symbolism of the pagan to that of Christian imagery of Hope . Certain regions and cultures have kept the tradition alive  and  the best  known are from the the Ukraine. Their Pasyanka  can mean any type of decorated egg, but specifically refers to the wax resist batik method of dying and decorating the eggs. The symbols and colors  used all have meaning and had been passed on to each new generation.

Though the ancient symbolism and traditions are wanning, use of the egg is evolving into new forms of “all year” non traditional artistic expressions.
This exhibit will have some eggs of the psayanky style  of decorating eggs ,  but most will be of the more contemporary use of the egg as a base on which to create  carvings, paintings and perhaps a jeweled box or two. There are lamps and chalice  or two of a type that  the ancient Romans used to hold their ligations.

The painters have used the egg shell or wooden eggs as their “canvas” to paint their landscapes and portraits. The sculptors have  pierced, carved and etched goose and ostrich eggs into wonderful bas relief images. Bejeweled works of eggs formed of precious metals and studded with gems will also a part of the exhibit.
The eggs on display will be made by, or on loan from  members of TVAA or invited local artists.

Be sure to come and view these elegant and unique works of art which will be on display during March at Gallery ‘n’ Gifts located in historic downtown Tehachapi at 100 W. Tehachapi Blvd.
