The Tehachapi Western Events Association has set its schedule for the coming year. It includes a three-event Ranch Sorting Buckle Series on June 9, July 28 and Aug. 4. It also will have playdays on April 28, Sept. 29 and Oct. 27 and a Trail Trial on Sept. 15. All these events are at the Bo-V Arena in Tehachapi. There also will be two trail rides on May 19 and Oct. 13. The sites are still to be determined. TWEA also has a few barrel races co-hosted with the National Barrel Horse Association, also at BO-V. The JB Cattle Company in Rosamond is planning a few things for the horseman in the next few months. It has a progressive type clinic, which will meet in different locations once a month. It will include beginning horsemanship/groundwork exercises in the morning and advanced horsemanship in the afternoon. Cattle work and roping also will be included. The first in the series is April 14th at the Second Chance Ranch in Rosamond. The cost is $75.
It's also hosting a Californian Vaquero style Fiesta Ranch Roping on April 22 at the Broken Arrow Ranch, beginning at 9 a.m. There will be two events – progressive roping and cut'n'rope, each involving two-person teams. Progressive roping will require headers and healers to use a progression of three different loops, while cut’n’rope requires teams to cut, then rope a cow.
The 300-year-old tradition of Californio Vaquero ranch work and horsemanship promotes a natural and willing partnership between horse and rider. Californio is a term that loosely refers to the styles and traditions brought to this part of the country before it was a state, thus it is a mix of Spanish style riding and early California ranch life. Ropers and spectators are welcome. The fee is $25 per person for each of the two events. Spectators are free. For more information, contact Brandie Dunn at www.jbcattleco.com or 332-7249. E-mail inquiries should be sent to SonnyCodyCanyon@aol.com.

The United Pegasus Foundation (UPF) is holding a Hay Drive Raffle. Donations are $5 a ticket or $20 for five. The raffle will coincide with its Open House on June 2.
