To the ancient Romans, the cross was a symbol of torture and death. But, for Christians the cross is a symbol of God's love for us.
Love is not just an emotion that makes us feel good. Love is a much deeper feeling than a childish infatuation.
Love that God gives us is a sacrificial commitment. Love is unselfish, compassionate and forgiving.
Our Lord loves us so much that He came out of heavenly glory to live as a true human being and face all the sorrow and suffering of this world. His love led Him to allow Himself to be put on a cross and take all the punishment that we deserve for our sins.
You could say Jesus loved us to death, or that He loved us all the way to heaven. Jesus, as He was nailed to the cross, stretched out His arms and said, “I love you this much.”
As a man died on a cross, his internal organs would crush his lungs. Each breath would require a great effort and he would die when he was unable to breathe.
Jesus demonstrated His great love while He was hanging on the cross in horrible agony. He was able to speak up and asked God to forgive the people who were putting Him to death.
Just before He died, our Lord called out in a loud voice, “It is finished.”
It was obvious to all that He was willingly giving His life as the final and atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world.
Because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, we now have a right relationship with God and are assured of eternal life with God in heaven.
Each time we see a cross we are reminded of God's infinite love for us.
