Deanna Doran, Tehachapi resident and retired Hollywood costumer, and Anna Marie Swanson, lifelong sewing enthusiast and history buff, will be teaching vintage hat making classes at the Errea house every Thursday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. These two talented craftswomen invite you to join them for free – that’s right, free session of haberdashery fun.

Choose any style hat from any period, be it Victorian, Civil War or semi-modern, whatever suits your fancy. Deanna and Anna Marie will assist you in your creation. Fabrics, patterns and trims are available at minimal cost to all budding milliners. Then join your fellow hat enthusiasts each Thursday afternoon in the well stocked workroom at the Errea House until your finished headdress is ready to top your proud head. Imagine all the fun you’ll have as your costumed noggin turns heads at community events like the Ice Cream Social or Mountain Festival.

In addition to the creating of hats, there will also be a hat blocking lesson offered by Harry Rotz, Tehachapi resident and well-known, well-respected professional Hollywood hatmaker of over 30 years. Rotz’s hats have graced the heads of many Hollywood actors and actresses and he is now the resident hatmaker at Western Costume Company, the oldest movie costume house in Hollywood.

For more information about the fun every Thursday afternoon at the Errea house with the mad milliners, call Deanna at 821-4821 or Anna Marie at 823-1322.

The Errea House is also looking for volunteer seamstresses to help sew costumes for future fundraisers. The project involves re-creating a period look for sepia style “old time photos” where participants can become saloon girls, gunslingers or other historical characters for a Kodak moment. Patterns, fabrics and instructions will be provided. For more information call Deanna at 821-4821.
