Most students can't wait for Spring Break because it means spending time at the beach, hanging out with friends, traveling with family, or just relaxing in front of the TV. But for the teens of Bear Valley Church Youth Group, Spring Break is a time for hard work, hot weather, and serving God.
Each year the Bear Valley Church Youth Group takes time out of their Spring Break vacation to travel down to Ensenada, Mexico and meet with Real Life Ministries in order to construct homes for two Mexican families.
This year the group helped restore a house that had recently been in a fire and also built two additions onto homes that needed to be finished. Real Life Ministries sponsors the groups who travel to Ensenada, each alternately building half of a house in order to conserve time and to give the family at least part of a home to live in, until another group comes to finish the home.
While they weren't working, the group was able to go shopping for souvenirs, eat Mexican ice cream, eat at a local taco stand and attend a church on Sunday.
“I really enjoyed the worship [at the church] because it reminded me that there is one God. He isn't just in Mexico or America,” stated Genie Schaffer, a junior at Tehachapi High School.
By the end of the trip, the each person of the group was able to bring back different types of knowledge, whether it was how to use tools, or that we often take things for granted, or even how to trust in God.
One thing that the entire group learned was that this mission’s trip was not an ordinary trip to Mexico; it gave the group more to think about than just themselves and their own needs.
“We came down here and thought we were helping the people, but they are really helping us. We have a lot to learn from them as far as joy,” claimed Melody Henderson, a sophomore at Tehachapi High School.

Yes this was the best trip and the best week of my life. I feel closer to the Lord now than I ever have. What I learned is sometimes you have to do things you aren't comfortable doing because they're for the Lord. And that as Christians we should get to know each other and each other's struggles. Proverbs 10:12 "Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs."
