The Tehachapi Humane Society has had a lot of positive response to our letter concerning abandoned animals, and THS wants to thank all who have commented, whether it's been good or bad because it lets us know you are reading about the problems that we are encountering. THS attended the City Council meeting and presented this to them and we are truly grateful for their interest. Hopefully this will lead to a future shelter in our area as it will help immeasurably with the abandoned and lost animals.
THS has a lot planned for the month of May. Our biggest fund raiser of the year is coming up, so we hope everyone will help. The annual THS Rummage Sale will be held on Saturday, May 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you can help by donating items, working at picking up and delivering, selling, and buying please call 823-0699 and leave your name and phone number and someone will get back to you. Keep the date on your calendar, as THS has a lot of yard items, camping items, children's toys, household stuff, crafting supplies, and the list is growing. We prefer not to have large appliances and furniture as we don't have the means to pickup or store these huge things. So, get busy with your spring cleaning and think of us before you throw out something that can still be used — then call us.
One of our larger Craft and Bake Sales will be held on Memorial Day weekend, May 26 and 27, at the Veterans' Hall on “F” Street, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Tehachapi Train Club is again allowing us to share their space. THS is always so happy they think of us, as these events always help support us and it gives us a chance to talk to so many animal lovers. If you can help with donating craft items, baked goods or helping with time at the table, call Patsy at 822-3314. THS has also had the good fortune to find homes for some of our adoptable pets during this event. People will see the board with the pictures of our “cuddly adoptables” and wind up with a new friend in the family. We love it when that happens.
THS is planning a day trip out to Sand Canyon on Saturday, May 19, at 10 a.m. to tour Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue. This will be an opportunity to see, in person, another organization that rescues and cares for animals of a larger size than we normally deal with. There is no charge for the tour, but I hear they have some really nice and interesting items in their gift shop which aids them in performing their program. For more information and directions, call 823-0699 and leave your name and number.
Did you know that the Tehachapi Humane Society also volunteers for Highway Cleanup? For many years, the Gunnels did this and when they moved out-of-state, we took it over. If you would like to help with this, there's always room for more help. It can be a great day spent doing some good, getting some exercise and just enjoying being outdoors with friendly people. Again, call our number and someone will get back to you.
