The offense was drenched with an unexpected cool-down in two league games last week, but Tehachapi countered with impressive play on defense to maintain their undefeated league record in a 5-3 win over Taft and a 3-2 victory over Bakersfield Christian.

“We had a couple of grueling games and we had to travel to both of them this week,” said head coach Tracy Goodell. “We’re pretty dry in our at bats, but we’re happy to go on the road and pull it out.”

Against Taft, Kasie Muro recorded a double for the Lady Warriors to lead the offense. Michelle Baxter got the nod at pitcher and was relieved by Katie Snapp in the sixth, who recorded the save.

Tehachapi’s Baxter went five solid innings against Bakersfield Christian last Thursday and gave way to Snapp to ice the final two innings, who registered four strike-outs in limited action. The two Lady Warrior pitching aces were also assisted in the infield by strong play by Erin Golackson, who scooped up back-to-back grounders to force two outs in the fifth inning when the Eagles were threatening.
“We had a good solid foundation defensively,” added Goodell. “We get better, the league gets a little bit better, and that’s usually how it goes.”

Offensively, Tehachapi (16-4; 5-0 SSL) opened up the game with a 2-0 lead when Kelcey Kapitzke drove in two runs on an error pop-fly miss from left field. Kaptizke struck again in the third inning when a double dropped fair down the left field line to score Kayla Kapitzke and a 3-2 game-score count.

“We need to get back to our foundations, our players are getting the idea that it’s toward the close of the season,“ Goodell said. “Right now everyone’s chasing our tail, we need to be on top of our game to stay ahead. Everything matters from here on out.”

Tehachapi will have two contests against Arvin Monday and Tuesday, and face off with Shafter on the road Thursday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Braves dropped their first league game of the season last Tuesday against Taft 6-3, but came back with a big offensive game last Thursday in a 20-11 victory over Bakersfield Christian.

Shelby Flick recorded five stikeouts against Taft, while Ashli Traynham, Heather Andrade, Cheyanne Warren-Diaz and Hannah Ricker all had hits for Tehachapi (9-2; 4-1 SSL).

Against Bakersfield Christian Shelby Flick went the distance giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits with one walk and seven strike outs. Hannah Ricker scored four times, while Heather Andrade had a two-run double to break the game open.

“We had 13 errors in the BCHS game, we just aren't firing on all cylinders right now. Too many mental mistakes both offensively and on the defensive side of the ball,” said head coach Mike Heckathorn. “This is a great group of lady athletes and hopefully they'll pull together for the stretch run of SSL play.”
