I have recently arrived at the age when neurologists tell us it is a good idea to learn new things in order to stretch our brains a bit. (That’s not exactly how they put it; but that is my interpretation of what they say!) So I decided to learn how to quilt, even though I come from a long line of non-quilters. I went to a local quilt store optimistically to choose my fabric from among the many beautiful options available. Having chosen fabric for sewing clothes in the past, I thought that fabric selection would be easy. But I quickly became overwhelmed! Although it was easy to choose one beautiful piece at a time, it was impossible for me to understand how those pieces would fit together. I found a beautiful purple flower print which would make an attractive dress, but when I held it next to other, non-purple, non-flowered prints I could not imagine the beauty of the whole quilt. “Take it on faith,” my quilting friend told me, “I know it will look beautiful when it is finished.”
Sometimes a life of faith is like a quilt. We see bits and discover glimpses of God each day, but the totality of God is unknowable until our lives are finished. Our job is merely to make each piece, each day, as beautiful as we can; and leave the rest to God. That is why faith is called a journey and not a destination. Most of us are pretty good at avoiding the stains and ugliness that can ruin a piece of quilting or a day; but some of us err in trying too hard to control the final outcome. The good news is that we can let go of trying to control “everything” and try our best simply to live each day. To have faith is to take life a piece at a time and then to trust that God will stitch it all together into a beautiful whole.
