Analyzing the recorded times of league competitors going into the South Sequoia League meet, it was no secret that both the Warriors and Lady Warriors were heavy favorites to take team titles.

When it was all said and done, Tehachapi turned paper predictions into iron-clad results, with both varsity swim teams winning the league championship. It is the third title for the girls and first for the boys.

“Before the competition we sat down and scored the whole meet based on the scouting reports that we had,” said head coach Herman Rijfkogel. “It’s pretty amazing when things fall into place like they did, we came in here pretty confident.”

One of many bright spots for Tehachapi was the swimming by Dylan Patton, who has won every event he has competed in this season in duel meets and the league finals.

“I’m not really swimming for myself, it’s all about the team,” said Patton. “We all worked hard and practiced hard and we just look forward to competing out there.”

Overall scoring had the Warriors winning with a total team score of 312.5, followed by Taft (271.5), Bakersfield Christian (242), Shafter (143), and Wasco (91). Lady Warriors finished with a point total of 307, followed by Bakersfield Christian (226), Taft (221.5), Shafter (151), and Wasco (145.5).

“It’s amazing, there are such good swimmers every year,” said Lady Warrior Chelsi Dominguez. “All the freshmen that came out this year made all the difference, and everyone just came together. It was awesome.”

Tehachapi will be in action again this Saturday in the CIF Division II championships, with hope of continuing the momentum from winning the league title.

“Things went according to plan, absolutely,” added Rijfkogel. “We’re the overall winners of the South Sequoia League. That’s just fantastic.”
