The Antelope Valley Chapter recently selected two local high schools to receive grants in the areas of science and technology. The Tehachapi High School Robotics Team will be awarded $3,000 and the Tehachapi High School Engineering and Manufacturing Academy program will receive a $2,000 award. A formal presentation of the AV Chapter grants will occur during the 11th Annual ITEA Instrumentation Workshop to be held at China Lake at the Kerr McGee Center on Wednesday, May 9, at 8 to 9 a.m.

The Antelope Valley Chapter has provided more than $100,000 in grants since its inception in 1991. Over the years, the chapter has awarded funds to local schools in Mojave, Palmdale, Quartz Hill, Rosamond, Edwards, Tehachapi and Lancaster.
This year the grant awards are based on five primary criteria: 1) Student technology, 2) Clear schedule and resource requirements, 3) Complete and understandable explanation of project, 4) Relationship to the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) mission, and 5) Outreach to student population and/or other schools.

Tehachapi High will use its funds for both its Robotics Team and its Engineering and Manufacturing Academy.

The Tehachapi Robotics Club will also participate in the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition, which will offer the students a unique opportunity to participate in a hands-on design, manufacturing and program management where students learn that engineering and science can be as interesting and captivating as a sporting event. The build period is six weeks long, but the training, competition, planning, interface and follow-up make it a year-round program at the school. It is most likely the most demanding and fulfilling project that these students will ever be involved in during their high school years. The program is designed to mimic a real life business scenario that introduces the students to a fast paced engineering problem with a real time solution, aided of course with engineers and other professional mentors from companies in our area. Working directly with mentors is, in fact, what sets this program apart from others. Students get to work side by side with professionals and experience what it is truly like to work in an engineering and business environment. Organizations, agencies and companies that have participated with the Tehachapi Robotics Club include engineers from NASA, Arcata and the AFFTC.

The Tehachapi High School Engineering and Manufacturing Academy (THEMA) will continue to motivate and encourage its students to pursue careers in engineering and design. One hundred ten students in all our grade levels participate in the THEMA program currently (roughly 9% of the high school student body), and it grows stronger each year.

A big draw for the program is that it introduces students to the realities of the engineering business with field trips to various engineering industries and students are able to complete projects using state-of-the-art design software.
