An abundance of red, white and blue could be seen Thursday, May 3 at the corner of Tucker Road and Hwy 202. A group of over 20 youth, adults and children from Country Oaks Baptist Church were out waving American flags, cheering and holding up signs in support of the National Day of Prayer. The group's patriotism and enthusiasm were contagious as many of the people driving by began honking their car horns, waving and saluting the display.
“We just want people to know that we believe that prayer really works,” explained Steve Vernoy, the group's leader and Student Ministries Intern at Country Oaks. “We don't want to take this National Day of Prayer for granted. We need to stand up and support our nation and our military through prayer.”
Doug Cowan, Assistant Pastor for Country Oaks commented, “I was really excited about the number of people that showed up for this event. It's great.”
After the group finished, they collected the signs and wrote messages of encouragement on them to send to the troops stationed in Iraq. Nikole Berrigan, whose boyfriend, Michael Cahill, is currently serving in Iraq, is planning to ship them off later this week.
“They'll cry,” she stated with a smile. “They're always so excited to get packages and just to see how much we were loving and supporting them here at home like this — they'll cry.”
