Born in 1930, Joann grew up on her family’s farm in Greentown, Pa. She assisted her parents with the operation of their boarding house. Later she joined the army and served as a medical laboratory technician.
After marrying Allen Berger, she continued to live in the Greentown area on her husband’s family farm. She had two children, John and Bruce. With the decline of small family farms, the family moved to Lancaster, where Allen worked in the aircraft industry and at the Air Force Rocket Laboratory. Following Allen’s retirement, they spent 22 years living in Phoenix, Ariz., eventually relocating to Tehachapi to be closer to their children.
Joann enjoyed traveling and the family had many memorable summer trips. She was a life-long learner and earned an AA degree from Antelope Valley College. in later years she became very interested in studying history, particularly of the Civil War era.
Joann is survived by her husband, Allen, and her sons, John and Bruce.
A memorial service is planned for May 29 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Tehachapi.
