A crop of mountain athletes took to the track in the Sequoia-Sierra Section finals earlier this month, with some new school records broken to highlight the action for the Warriors.
Track stand-outs who competed in competition representing Tehachapi included J.J. Balkar, Megan Bryant, Will Clark, Christina Danielson, Brennen Davis, Persephonie Devereaux, Cassie Harris, Eric Harroun, Sergei Horowitz, Katie Lang, Emily Leming, Katie Miles, John Roemer, Josh Strauss, Alek Taliulu, Markie Wahlstrom, Jake Weaver, and Sarah Whitson.
“When we go into meets like this, one thing of particular note is that since we do not have the pole vault at our school, we are actually competing on a less than equal basis with all the other schools,” said track coach Bob Papac. “This would be like our baseball teams or softball teams go into CIF competition and starting a game down 1-0. Potentially, we can go down by as many as 31 points to a team at the start. Heck of a handicap.”
Despite Tehachapi athletes competing in select events, Josh Strauss set a new record in the 300 hurdles (42.35), and the quartet of Brennen Davis, J.J. Balkar, Eric Harroun and Sergei Horowitz set a new frosh/soph record in the boys 4X400 relay (3:40.87).
“We have a lot to be proud of for our program, we won two girls varsity titles in the last four years,” added Papac. “And our future is bright, we have won two frosh/soph girls titles in the last two years, and five frosh/soph boys titles in the last five years. It really shows we have some good athletes here.”
Coaching this season for Tehachapi track included head coach Ed Weaver and assistant coaches Don Thomas, John Roemer, Greg Paige, Bruce Schkade, and Liz Watson.
Track and field awards will be given out on May 25, at 7 p.m. in the Tehachapi High School cafeteria in the team’s annual desert banquet.
