The Tehachapi Unified School District recognized classified employees (non-teaching or non-credentialed instruction positions) during an awards dinner held on May 21 at The Apple Shed.

Each school in the district presented its own Employee of the Year Award for excellence in their respective positions. Representatives from the district office, transportation and maintenance departments were also recognized for their outstanding service.

Marlene Bryant, a Title I reading program aid was honored by Tompkins Elementary School and she was also chosen as the overall District Classified Employee of the Year.

Tompkins’ Title I teacher, Sharon Weaver referred to Bryant as the “Jewel of the district.”

“She has helped kids from the heart, gratis. She nourishes them in reading,” Weaver said.

Others honored as Employees of the Year for their respective schools and departments also included:
• Karen McCormick, Golden Hills Elementary School 
• Debbie Bathe, Cummings Valley Elementary School
• Valerie Kerr, Jacobsen Middle School
• Margaret Mays, Tehachapi High School
• Joey Kaminsky, Monroe High School
• Sally Ehli, Transportation Department
• Ken Slighton, Maintenance Department
• Terri Roseberry, District Office
