Facing the best swimmers in the Central Valley, the Warrior contingent did not disappoint in the CIF Division I swimming championships, with the Warriors’ Michael Halaska taking the Division I individual title in the 100 breaststroke.
The boys team finished in ninth place overall and the Lady Warriors posted strong results in the preliminary rounds to end the season for both teams.
Clovis West won the team competition in both the boys and girls divisions, while Tehachapi took ninth place by beating out many Division I prominent programs such as Clovis East (10th place), Madera (11th place), Centennial (16th place), Redwood (23rd place) and Bakersfield High (26th place).
“Our boys just did great, ninth out of 62 schools is pretty good,” said head coach Herman Rijfkogel. “The girls did not place, but overall they did great as well. Having Michael Halaska break the minute mark in the 100 breaststroke and getting first place was sweet.”
Halaska, a junior, baited most of the competition in the preliminary rounds of the 100 breaststroke by posting a 1:00.71 for third place overall, but turned up the intensity in the finals by posting a sub-one minute mark of 59.82 to take the championship.
To put into perspective how impressive Halaska’s time is, the Division I collegiate first place mark in 2006 for the breaststroke was turned in by University of Texas’s Brendan Hansen, who won the title with a time of 58.19 seconds and is the current reigning silver medalist in the event at the last 2004 Olympics at Athens.
Overall medals for Tehachapi was the 200 individual medley relay team of Dylan Patton, Wesley Schultz, Michael Halaska, Vincent Dang in a fourth place finish (1:43.75); Halaska in the 200 individual medley with second place honors (1:56.32) and Halaska winning the CIF championship in the 100 breaststroke with a first place time of 59.82.
“All our boys came back for Saturday’s finals and our girls didn't qualify for finals but they represented Tehachapi with pride,” added Rijfkogel. “It was a great season.”
