Applications are now available for the 2007 Miss Rodeo Tehachapi Pageant. The winners will be announced during the Tehachapi Mountain Festival in August. There is an orientation meeting at the Veteran's Hall of Tehachapi on June 29 at 6 p.m. Rules and other information will be given. All contestants under the age of 18 years must have a parent or legal guardian present at orientation. The divisions will include Miss Rodeo Tehachapi, Jr. Miss Rodeo Tehachapi, and if there is enough interest, Little Miss Rodeo Tehachapi. Rodeo Queen contestants will compete in the areas of horsemanship, appearance, personality and ticket sales. Call pageant coordinator, Roxanne Sasia at 822-5325 for more information.
The Dust N Diamonds Equestrian Drill Team is now practicing weekly. Among the events the group will perform include the Tehachapi Mountain Festival Parade and the PRCA Rodeo. The team is recruiting new members to complement its current veterans riders. If interested in DND, contact Marilyn Morphis at 822-3219.
The Tehachapi Western Events Association has the first of its three Buckle Series Ranch Sortings on June 9 at the Bo-V Arena. The other dates include July 28 and Aug. 4. There will be daily money winners, but buckle hopefuls must be at all three events. In addition, TWEA also has a 3-event National Barrel Horse Race Series on June 23, July 14 and Aug. 25 at Bo-V.

The Tehachapi Mountain Chapter of the California Dressage Society (CDS) and the Bear Valley Dressage Club offers rated shows along with schooling and saddle fitting clinics. Tehachapi Equine Service is hosting an “Equine Festival” on July 22 at the TES Ranch on Haven Lane in Cummings Valley from 10 to 4. TES hopes to recruit various equine organizations and vendors for all of the equine enthusiasts in the area. Admission is free, but if you're interested in a booth the cost is $25. The Golden Gait Peruvian Horse Club is interested in finding owners of gaited horses in order to have special playdays, events or rides for those types of horses.
“We know there are a number of riders with gaited horses in the area, so we thought we might get all of them together and plan a few events,” said BeBe McClelland, a member of the Golden Gait Club. “We think there would be lots of interest in something like this.
If you have a gaited horse, give McClelland a call at 821-7605. The club also is hosting a yard sale on June 9.
ETI Corral 83 has its Triple Deal Poker Ride on June 16 in Stallion Springs, and it will include a special section for gaited horses, along with two other trail sections. The Pair of 2s Ride is not too hilly, scenic with good views of the valley and lasts two hours. The Full House Ride is scenic, hilly and three hours, and the Royal Flush Gaited Ride is scenic, hilly and fast and is three hours. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Poker hands are $5. The Pony Club of Tehachapi is a junior equestrian organization. The club teaches riding, mounted sports and the care of horses and ponies. Through this, riders develop responsibility, judgment, leadership and self-confidence. The group meets three times a month for mounted meetings and once a month for group instruction. Members must have a horse or access to one and be between the ages of five to 25. For more information call Lisa Severijn at 821-6505.
The Lilac Ranch Riding Club has a Playday on June 23 and a Trail Clinic on June 16. And there's still room for campers at the Adventure Horse Camp to be held June 24 through 30 at the Noah Beery, Jr., Ranch in Hart Flat. The Second Chance Ranch in Cummings Valley accepts horses that otherwise would have no place to go, whether it's because of old age, abuse, or if the owner can no longer take care of the animal. It is non-profit and accepts donations of money or supplies. The ranch also offers regular boarding at the 20-acre facility. Crescent Moon Ranch and Stables in Rosamond is hosting a Horse Day Camp June 18-22, for kids ages 8-15 from 8-12:30 (Monday-Thursday) and 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday. The camp will include Safe Horsemanship, Grooming, Handling, Basic Horse Psychology and Anatomy, Stable Management, Equine Nutrition, Saddling, Bridling, Tack Care and Level I Riding. Friday there will be a Playday where the children can show off their skills. Parents are encouraged to attend. There will be a BBQ afterwards with awards.
