“Just sit right back and you’ll here a tale, a tale of a fateful trip”….aboard the S.S. Bulldog.
“Cruise 2007” was the theme for a dance the Jacobsen Middle School 2007 8th grade class will not soon forget. Anticipation for the big dance was high, when students were finally allowed into the gym for the dance.
Planning for the big event took place months prior by Committee Chairwoman, Jenny Freeman, and assistant Chris Duff. Experts were brought in from the community to help with the staging of this event. Local Muralist Lyn Bennett partnered with GHS Art paraprofessional Nancy Miller to coordinate their crew of volunteer painters to paint spectacular murals within the gymnasium itself.
The finished product transformed the gym into a tropical ocean scene which set the stage for students to be boarding the cruise ship, the “S.S. Bulldog”. The ship was built inside the gym by volunteers using two elevated stages, cemented poles for railings with white sparkling lights illuminating the bow of the cruise ship as their dance floor. Palm trees were constructed by naturalist Paula Reed and placed around the gym to give it the festive island atmosphere. As students entered the gym, they were greeted with flower leis by their Captain, Mr. Eric Trigueiro and his first mates Vice Principal Chuck Monaco and Dean of Students Rick Scott.
As with any cruise, the buffet created the “wow” factor that surpassed any buffet these students had seen at JMS before. The buffet consisted of a beautiful arrangement of tropical fruits and decadent desserts with three Chocolate fondue dipping fountains. The culinary masters (along with a crew of volunteers) behind creating the buffet were Loni Johnson, Cheryl Stephens, Marie Castillo, Robin Harris, Lynette, Monica Lange, and Debbie Simpson. The students danced the night away to music put on by Tom Freeman and local THS “Techies” Jack Stoliker, Jake Cheshier and Kaitlin Crounse.
The festivities came to an abrupt halt when the on site “Coast Guard”, Mr. Trigueiro, had to adhere to strict protocol required of oceanic passenger vessels setting sail in American waters: That meant a life boat drill. An alarm was sounded as the deck hands, Sara Carroll, Paula Reed, Rick Scott and Victor Calvillo manned the life boats and distributed the “life jackets” (toilet seat covers) to the passengers. The night culminated with the crowning of a King and Queen of Cruise 2007 (see picture of Royal Court). The SS Bulldog was last seen sailing off into the horizon with Tehachapi’s finest 8th graders who are due to return sometime at the end of August, were they will embark on another journey as THS freshmen.
