At the final awards assembly of the 2006-07 school year, 5th grade teacher Barbara Penner was moved to tears by a full standing ovation when she was honored for her years of service at Cummings Valley Elementary School. Mrs. Penner is retiring from teaching, after working at both the Golden Hills and Cummings Valley sites in the Tehachapi Unified School District.
Besides her years of commitment to educating the students of Tehachapi, she has also dedicated countless hours to school efforts, including the student council, site council and much more. Mrs. Penner directed the student council fundraising activities for many years and raised over $30,000. With these funds the district will build an outdoor classroom, named in Mrs. Penner’s honor, which was confirmed by a board resolution. It will be named the Barbara Penner Outdoor Classroom.
