The students at Carden School recently conducted a fundraiser to finance their spring service project. In order to increase student involvement, the student council declared that the classes would war against each other. Their goal was to be the grade that could collect the most pennies by the end of the week. Their "weapons" were other loose coins which were placed in the collection jars of the other classes and counted against the total of that class. Competition became very intense and by the end of the week, the student body had raised $2,500.
The winner of the contest was Mrs. Bernard's kindergarten class, who for their efforts received an extra day of school where they did not have to wear their uniforms. The runner-up was Mrs. Judy's fifth grade class, with special recognition going to Mrs. Bowles seventh graders for raising the highest dollar total of all the classes.
The $2,500 was then used to purchase 250 phone cards which were shipped to the military hospital in Germany so that our wounded soldiers, who were fighting in Iraq, can contact their families and communicate with them until they are ready to return home.
Principal, Mrs. Betty Gubler, said, "I never expected this kind of success for a one-week event. What a great show of patriotic spirit! We will definitely do this again next year."
Got pennies, anyone?
