After impressive showings in league play and the inner-city playoffs, six Tehachapi teams earned the honor to represent the community in the Tournament of Champions held this past week at various ball parks around the valley.
In the major’s division, the Dodgers built upon their 14-3 regular season record to win the city tournament and the northern championship title with a victory over Lakes, 7-4. The impressive run included victories over Rosamond 3-1 and Cal City 18-4 prior to winning the title over their Lancaster little league opponent.
“From the first game to the last game it was a complete turnaround for us,” said head coach Paul Wheeler. “It was a fantastic season, overall play from each of the kids was great and we had a great pitching rotation.”
Travis Tessandori, Jeremy Duff, and Tyler Beardsley all contributed on the mound for the Dodgers. In the overall championship, the Dodgers fell in a close game to El Dorado, receiving 5 and a third solid innings from Tessandori, and strong offense after a 5-run fifth inning before El Dorado rallied late in the game to win.
Highlighting the offense was a homerun by Tyler Beardsley against Cal-City in the Northern section semi-finals.
The Padres also had a strong run in the major’s division, defeating Boron 4-3 and Mojave 13-1.
In junior baseball, the Dodgers defeated Kern Valley’s no.1 team 20-5 in the first round of the tournament, but fell to Mojave 15-13 in the northern section semi-finals in a 15-13 barnburner. The Cubs also faired well in the playoffs, defeating Cal City 14-6 and Kern Valley’s no.2 team 20-4 to reach the northern semi-finals.
In the championship, the Cubs fell by a close 10-8 score to Mojave.
Next up for little league baseball will be the all-star tournaments, set to run this week.
