Some local high school rodeo riders are going to the big show. Four area riders, including two from Tehachapi High School, qualified for the National High School Rodeo Championships in Springfield, IL, to be held July 23-28.
Sophomore Devon Gibson, of Tehachapi, won first place in Pole Bending at the California State Championship held in Bishop at the end of June and advances to the Nationals. She also competed in Cutting in Bishop.
Senior Taylor McIntosh, also of Tehachapi, is making his second trip to the National Finals as he won the Bare Back Riding title. He also competed in Saddle Bronc Riding.
Two riders from the Lancaster area advance to the Nationals - sophomore Jordan Berry in Pole Bending and junior Taylor Sanchez in Barrel Racing. Also from Lancaster, Alysse Sanderson made State Queen.
Those going to the Nationals will compete against riders from across the United States as well as Canada and Australia.
Tehachapi High School had three other riders qualify for the State Championship. Senior Jenna McCarthy competed in Team Roping, Cutting, Breakaway and Goat Tying. She and McIntosh will attend Feather River College in Quincy this fall, a school known for its rodeo teams.

The Dust N Diamonds announced it has seven new riders this season. The group will perform during the Tehachapi Mountain PRCA Rodeo at the Tehachapi Rodeo Grounds during the Tehachapi Mountain Festival, Aug. 18-19. DND also will be part of the Parade. The Tehachapi Western Events Association recently had the first of its three Ranch Sorting Events at the Bo-V Arena. The daily winners were based on the number of cows successfully penned in the two rounds. The winners included Ric Webber and Matthew Krueger, Karen Schuster and Dave Miller, and mother and son team Cheramy and Matthew Krueger. The standings for the buckles are based on the overall total number of cows penned. The leaders include the Krueger team with five; Joy Webber/Cindy Buchwitz with four and Ric Webber/ Matthew Krueger, Ric Webber/Cheramy Krueger and Ric Webber & Matthew Werle all with three. The next Sorting is July 21. TWEA also has barrel race in conjunction with the National Barrel Horse Association on July 14, also at Bo-V. For more information contact John Nelson at 823-1114 or click www.tehachapiwesternevents.com.
The Equine Festival at the Tehachapi Equine Service on Haven Lane has been changed from July 22 to Oct. 13. If you have any questions call Kim Coleman at 822-7884.
On a personal note, our four-year-old buckskin stallion, Plain Gold Colonel, aka, “Fudge,” recently won the Open Reining Class at the Bear Valley Springs Horse Show. With trainer Steve Pate aboard, he competed against a dozen other horses.
Fudge also has been showing in the Valley Cow Horse Association circuit, which draws horses from Fresno down to this area. Some of the venues have included Exeter, Porterville, Bakersfield and Tejon. He's currently in sixth place in the overall standings in Working Cow Horse and has been improving in each show. We hope to have him at stud next year to outside mares.
Don't forget, if you have any information to report on the horse community such as upcoming events, clinics, raffles or you've won an award, please contact Jill at 823-1114, or e-mail jillbn@yahoo.com. Jill and her husband John operate the Bar Double J Ranch on Cameron Canyon Road, raising performance quarter horses (www.barjjranch.com).
