Another grass fire broke out near Caliente-Bodfish and Bealville Roads on July 15. Driven by moderate winds and tall grass fueling the much taller flames, the blaze quickly advanced to engulf a total of 104 acres burning along a two mile front.
According to the Kern County Fire Department, the cause of the fire may be related to a passing train although an investigation continues, along with several other suspicious fires that have started in that area over the past weeks.
A total of 63 firefighters and equipment, including two bulldozers, Helicopter 408 and Air Tanker 430, worked under the command of Kern County Fire Chief Heidi Dinkler to get the fire under control within 90 minutes. The fire managed to jump a fire break early on, but was still contained in quick fashion. The fire did not damage any structures and there were no injuries related to this incident.
This is yet another suspicious fire in a string of fires that have plagued the Caliente/Bodfish area this summer. The public is urged to keep their eyes open and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement or county fire personnel while traveling through this area. Non-emergency phone calls can be directed to 391-7000 or dial 911 for emergency response situations.
