With its King Air lead plane showing the way, CAL Fire's DC-10 Airtanker 910 is again patroling the skies over Tehachapi. While fighting the White Fire on June 26, the aircraft
suffered damage that required it to make an emergency landing in Victorville.

This will be the last year this plane will be used. ( I hope) It is a waste of money, it does little good due to its very high drops. It does make the viewer's at home feel all warm and fuzzy when it shows up, but thats about it. The state could have added 20 type two helicopters in its place and would of had a bigger impact on this fire season.

If it saves a single home, it's worth every penny. Besides, I'm thinking it's capable of dropping from somewhat of a low altitude. You know, with June's squirrel strike and all.
Your helicopter argument makes sense, but progress costs.
