On Wednesday, Aug. 1, Karen Campbell’s “Because We Care” project sent out more than 265 packages to the troops in Iraq from the Tehachapi Post Office.
Because We Care is a non-profit group that collects donations and bundles them into care packages for the troops. Every dollar that is donated goes to the group’s goal of raising $5,000 for postage.
“We can never thank all of the angels that have jumped on the Because We Care Project Bandwagon. This project seems to bring out the best in everyone,” said Campbell.
According to Campbell, it took over 500 hours to pack all of the goodies collected over the past couple of months, including an X-Box, phone cards, vitamins, non perishable food and drink, notes of support, DVDs, CDs and hygiene items.
“It's a lot of work, but we have such a great time while we are working for our troops,” said Campbell.
To help aid the group, Three Way Automotive Group, of Bakersfield, once again provided a Hummer for Campbell to transport all of the packages for shipment.
Those who came to the post office were given the opportunity to purchase a limited edition “Because We Care” T-shirt for $20. All proceeds go to helping raise funds for postage. Whitewater Cafe, of Kernville, and Bakersfield Pain Management helped to print the shirts and ‘hachapi Tee's donated the logo and provided the shirts at cost. T-shirts are also available by calling Campbell at 821-6038.
