The Tehachapi Mountain Rodeo Association (TMRA) hosted the 44th annual Tehachapi Mountain PRCA Rodeo on Aug. 18 and 19, with hundreds of professional cowboys and cowgirls coming from all over the country to compete for cash prizes, as well as state and national professional rodeo standings.

An avid horseman and new member and supporter of the TMRA, Tehachapi's Chief of Police Jeff Kermode performed the honors of “presenting the colors,” proudly carrying the United States flag into the arena during the Grand Entry.

“I was more nervous mounted aboard my horse, standing there before all those rodeo fans than any police action I had ever been involved in,” said the Chief.
Rodeo Committee Chairman Dal Bunn, aka “Doc Boene,” reprised his role as announcer again this year.

Bunn described this year’s event as a, “culmination of many, many days of volunteer labor,” as TMRA members spent all year raising the estimated $40,000 to $50,000 necessary to host the event.

“It is because of these good citizens that we are able to carry on the time-honored tradition of rodeo here in the valley,” Bunn said.

The weekend’s exciting western events included Team Roping, Steer Wrestling, Saddle Bronc Riding, Barrel Racing and the always popular Bull Riding.

Tehachapi’s own Dust n’ Diamonds Equestrian Drill Team performed for the crowds who packed the stands, while Tehachapi’s Rodeo Queens demonstrated horsemanship skills, beauty and poise as last year’s queens abdicated their crowns to the incoming court.

The Salt River Rodeo Company provided stock for the event. Professional rodeo clown and Barrellman Barry “Boom Boom” Johnson and PRCA Bullfighter Bryan Wooley entertained the audience, in addition to performing the often dangerous and physically challenging task of distracting the bulls to keep riders safe. More than $22,000 in prize money was paid out to the athletes who keep the western tradition of rodeo alive.

“Every year at this time, it becomes apparent to those of us who have helped make this event grow and prosper, that the Tehachapi Valley is very supportive and dedicated to our western heritage and the western way of life,” said Bunn.
