Having read the article in the August 29 issue of the Tehachapi News entitled, “Improvements to St. Malachy’s will maintain tradition, history,” I am conscience bound to ask questions that appear to be in conflict with the facts stated in the article. I trust that Chris or others will clarify these troubling concerns.

First, how is the parish being represented or given the opportunity to contribute when the available seats would only accommodate less than one percent (1%) of the total number of families of the parish? We were told that you could not attend unless you were assigned to one of these limited seats. The one percent is reduced considerably because several seats were occupied by members of one family. One percent is not an invitation to “any and all” parishioners. It does not say to me that an “overwhelming majority of the parishioners would decide what if any improvements would be made.”

Secondly, why is it necessary to bring in an “accomplished architect and liturgical consultant from Colorado Springs” to facilitate the meeting,” especially when we are only talking about “expanding and updating bathrooms, refurbishing pews, repairing or replacing flooring where necessary and providing accommodations to the handicapped?” Just what qualifies Mr. Bill Brown as a consultant to be able to advise the parish on an “effective outreach to the needy of the parish and town and continuing to foster authentic community in accord with our parish mission.” Mr. Brown’s stipend is a considerable amount. Would it not be better to spend this money on the necessary improvements that are cited?

I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to our pastor Rev. Joel Davadilla, Rev. Roger LeDuc, and Mr. Bill Brown, however it appears inappropriate in light of the above questions. When and if an explanation follows, such an expression might be forthcoming.
