The Citizens Service Unit (CSU) acts as a buffer for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, allowing officers to remain on the streets where they are most needed. Approximately 200 volunteers serve Kern County, and the Tehachapi unit is among the top groups with the most hours of service.
At an annual dinner and award ceremony held for the volunteer unit, the Kern County Sheriff’s Department acknowledged the Tehachapi volunteers for their many hours of service and dedication, with over 8,000 hours logged last year. During the award ceremony Sheriff Donny Youngblood acknowledged the volunteers for assisting the department, without whom issues would not be handled so rapidly.
Some of the duties the volunteer unit perform include administrative work, such as the transport of documentation to the Mojave Substation District Attorney’s office, transport of county vehicles for servicing, and assisting the Sheriff’s Department in traffic control and patrolling.
Volunteers are required to undergo a 30 hour academy training and accompany a Deputy on a 2 to 4 hour ride along.
Current volunteers for the Tehachapi CSU are Richard Murphy, Captain; Paula Raboy, Administrative Lieutenant; Sharon Cornelison, Opporations Lieutenant; Randy Roe, Squad Leader; Diane Kind, Squad Leader; Manuel Terrazas, member; Robert Bakman, member; Sam Raboy, member; Mike Davies, member; and Barbara Stevens, member.
The following volunteers have received special recognition for dedication and outstanding service to the Tehachapi CSU: Paula Raboy received the KCSD special plaque award for East Kern CSU volunteer of the year and a CSU plaque award for her 1,001 hours of volunteering; Sam Raboy with 284 hours; and Barbara Stevens with 238 hours; Robert Bakman has given dedicated service for 13 years; Mike Davies, 13 years of service and Barbara Stevens, 13 years of service.
Volunteers and donations to support the Tehachapi CSU are always welcome and appreciated. For more information on the Tehachapi CSU, to volunteer or make a donation contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Station at 823-6060.
