Joe passed away on Oct.4 at Arrowhead Medical Center in Colton, CA. He survived an automobile accident that involved a utility pole, which caused an inferno that destroyed his truck and the surrounding area. Joe pulled himself from the truck while being severely electrocuted. He was assisted to further safety by a young bystander named Gavin. Joe spent two months in the hospital recovering and was unique, being the only person known to the surgeon to have ever survived such electrical voltage. Joe was singularly unfortunate to be infected by Acinetobacter bacteria during his hospital stay. Joe’s weakened immune system could not fight off this infection, despite heroic efforts made by the hospital staff.
Joe was brave and not afraid. Joe was a young man who loved music and became an excellent drum player. He also enjoyed sports, such as paintball, snowboarding and baseball. Joe was funny and kind, despite a life of hardships. He especially loved his dogs Duke and Greta. These few words could never describe his immense personality and love for his family and friends. We will forever remember and be proud of the person he was and how he fought his own personal obstacles.
Joe was preceded in death by his Father, Thomas, and his grandmother, Marilyn. Joe is survived by his mother, Betsy and his brother, William; his stepfather, Patrick; his grandfather, Burt, as well as many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
There will be a celebration of Joe’s life at a future date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to NAMI of Kern County at P.O. Box 9144 Bakersfield, CA 93389-9144.
