The students at Heritage Oak School celebrated Reformation Day on Friday, Oct. 26, by dressing in period costumes reminiscent of the early 1500s.
“We wanted the students to see and feel what it was like to live during this very interesting period in our history,” explained Vanessa Cross, administrator of the school.
This Reformation Day honored William Tyndale, a Bible scholar in England who graduated from Oxford University with a mastery in seven languages. He subsequently felt called upon by God to translate the Bible into English so that all people could read it. The church at the time felt that only the clergy could properly interpret Scripture, thereby denying Tyndale's request to translate the Bible.
Tyndale fled to Germany where he translated the Old Testament and found willing sympathizers who printed his work. Copies of the English Bible were then smuggled back to England to an eager public. Inciting the wrath of church leaders, Tyndale was ultimately betrayed by a friend, charged with heresy and burned at the stake.
One year after his death, King Henry VIII of England approved the publication of an English Bible. Tyndale's translation was used as a precursor of the King James Bible still in use today.
Students, parents, guests and staff were treated to a lunch of meats, cheeses, fruits, pastries, bread, and cider. Remaining true to the historical theme, students served themselves in trays resembling pewter plates and ate without utensils (after washing their hands to satisfy modern day hygiene standards).
When asked about the best part of the day, student Bonnie Wilson replied, “Lunch. And that both elementary and secondary students got together to share the day.”
Student David Kaplan felt the day was a good reminder of the sacrifices made by earlier Christians that enable us to read the Bible today. He then added with a smile, “And, not having school today.”
