The Bear Valley Spring Horse Show Year End High Point winners were announced recently at a dinner at the Equestrian Center. The BVS Horse Show included three shows over the summer, with the participants scoring points for high finishes. The overall High Point winner for ages 12 and under was Veronica Kuenstle, riding Red Pony. Reserve High Point winner was Elizabeth Oglesby on Irish Eyes. Brittany Sigston, riding Gooberlicious, was the High Point winner for ages 13-17, and Rori Skellenger was Reserve champion on Artfully Minx. Roberta Brewer, riding Irish Fling, was High Point winner for ages 18 and older, and Milt Wetzel on Zips Majorette was Reserve winner.

Kuenstle and Oglesby tied for first place for High Point English Riders. Sigston was Reserve Champion and she also was High Point Western Rider. Wetzel was Reserve Champion. High Point Halter winner was Jon Storrs with Lady Hawk, and Reserve winner was Barbara Champlin with Miss Rosey McKool.

High Point Jumping went to Skellenger on Artfully Minx and Reserve champion was Hailey Phillips on Sierra Nevada. High Point Driving winner was Leslie Reynolds with Littleman Tate and Reserve champion was Jeanne Riesen with Undaunted Independence. High Point Trail winner was Matt Sheridan on Quelow Rosita Fritz and Reserve champion was Melanie Kykal on Copper Destiny.

High Point Junior Reining winner was Becca Barnes on Chicks Honey Lovin and Reserve champion was Oglesby on Dots Star Chex. High Point Senior Reining Champions were Steve Pate, riding our own Plain Gold Colonel, and Bill Cameron on Dun It for Money. Reserve winner was Pate on Just Gold.

The Tehachapi Western Events Association wraps up the last of its 2007 event with a Playday on Nov. 10. Belt buckles will be awarded to the top overall Youth winner. Sign-ups will be at 9:30 a.m. TWEA had a Playday on Oct. 27.  Youth rider Julia Stevens won the barrels, bi-wrangle, Washington poles and streaking poles, and Christina McKenzie won the keyhole. In the Open Division, Trish Stevens, mother of Julia, won the barrels, Robin McCaffery won the bi-wrangle and streaking poles, Elaine Aultman won the Washington poles and Jill Nelson (me) won the keyhole.

The Lilac Ranch in Tehachapi is planning a Fall Day Camp on Nov. 19-21 and Dec. 26-29. For more info contact Melissa Moors, 822-7062, www.lilacranchridingclub.com.

Moors also working with the Wild Wind Ranch (Highline Rd, Tehachapi) to host an Extreme Speed Gymkhana series. The next two events are Nov. 25 and Dec. 2 (weather permitting). Entrants must compete in eight of 12 events to be eligible for prizes. The events will include barrels, poles and a mystery speed race. The cost is $35 per day. Contact Moors for more info.

The Spit Creek Ranch (Tehachapi) has a team/ranch sorting event on Nov. 17. The ranch also offers Roping Practice/Lessons on Thursday nights, Sorting Practice on Wednesday nights and Greenhorn/Beginning Ranch Work on Tuesday and Saturday nights. For more information call Steve Pate, 661.203.2153.

The Rock'n RC Ranch is hosting a Horse Health Seminar on Nov. 10. The seminar will benefit the Tehachapi Humane Society. The seminar is designed to prepare the horse owner to handle everyday and emergency horse situations with calm thinking and practical first aid skills. Among the topics to be discussed is taking vital signs, first aid techniques, creating an effective first aid kit and handling your horse during a vet/farrier visits.

There will be a silent auction of horse goodies, door prizes and informational handouts. The cost is $30 and check-in begins at 8 a.m. For more information, contact Marilyn White, 823-7725, copper93561@yahoo.com.

Chuck Lewter of Chadeau Mountain Clydesdales had a good showing at the LA County Fair in Pomona. Robyncroft Perfect Son (Sonny) was Reserve Grand Champion, Reserve Senior Champion and was second in Halter. He also competed in Stallion & Gelding Cart Class, Obstacle Course, Gentleman to Drive, Bareback, Reinsmanship, and Under Saddle (9th out of 20).

Scotchwind P.S. Grace (Grace) also was Reserve Grand Champ, Reserve Senior Champ and won the Halter division. She also had top finishes in Mare Cart, Junior Reinsmanship, Junior under Saddle, Adult Bareback and Adult under Saddle. His two other Clydesdales also did well. “Patty” was second in Halter and third in Prep Cart, and “Faith” was third in Halter. For more information on the ranch contact Lewter at 333-3519.

If you like Gymkhana, the California Gymkhana Association has several local chapters with upcoming events. The Kern County Gymkhana Association, District 18, in Bakersfield, has an event on Nov. 11, at the Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield. For more information contact Joanne Galbraith (845-3013.)

The Thunder Hooves Gymkhana, District 23 of Ridgecrest, has competitions on Nov. 10 and Dec. 1 at Desert Empire Fairgrounds. For information call John (760-377.5683).
