Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Thanksgiving was originally set up because the Pilgrims wanted to take time out of their busy lives and thank God for all the good harvests and having enough to eat. Today, Thanksgiving goes far beyond that original setting.
I sat down and started listing all the things that I am thankful for. They are as follows:
1. I am thankful for the blessing of life itself.
2. I am thankful for reasonably good health.
3. I am thankful that our military is the strongest in the world and protects us.
4. I am thankful that I have so many friends.
5. I am thankful that I had such a wonderful job.
6. I am thankful for retirement.
7. I am thankful that I live in such a wonderful city such as Tehachapi.
8. I am thankful that I was able to get a college education.
9. I am thankful for my church family and that God is in my life.
10. I am thankful for my family, my wife, my children, and my grandchildren.
I could have gone on with this list but I think you get the point. Thanksgiving is really the nexus of who we are. In the city of Tehachapi we are thankful for business people who are honest and sincere and are involved in volunteering their efforts to help less fortunate families.
We all have an opportunity this year — and each and every day — to help those who are less fortunate than we are. If someone is homeless, then we can help them find shelter. If someone is hungry, then we can help get them food. If someone is penniless then we can give them a couple of dollars for a cup of hot coffee. In other words, there is so much we can do for those who are down and out, starting with listening and ending by acting. If you can just focus on helping one person, then bigger problems can become manageable; one precious life at a time.
This Thanksgiving let's commit ourselves to not being selfish, to give generously of our time, effort and money to the sick and elderly and to show the world that Tehachapi really is about “Quality of Life” and we are a city dedicated to helping others.
I can really see all of us smiling now.
Again, Happy Thanksgiving.
