Brianna Kohnen, a sixth-grade student at Carden School has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning the local Peace Poster competition sponsored by the Tehachapi Lions Club. Dakota Jones, a sixth-grade student from Jacobsen Middle School, was the runner-up.

Brianna's poster was among more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 20th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. The Lions Club sponsors this contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

The poster, one of fifteen submitted, was selected by a panel of judges including Leah Schaefer, Dorothy Morris, Sherry Brands, and Carol Tope. Brianna's poster was judged for originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Peace Around the World”.

The winning poster must advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international rounds of competition if she is to be declared the grand prize winner.

One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $2,500, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to New York City, for the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. Last year's winner was from Tarzana, California.

We are cheering Brianna on as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world.

Brianna and the runner-up, Dakota Jones, were honored for their participation at the Tehachapi Lions Club on Nov. 15. Brianna is in Mrs. Morgan's class at Carden School and was awarded a $50 check. Dakota, a student in Mr. Thiesse's  sixth-grade class at Jacobsen received a check for $25.
