Christmas aboard Space Station America was celebrated by members of the Carden Schools Flaming Bows, Orchestral music class.
Written by the school’s music teacher, Gayel Pitchford, she took baton to hand and led her young students through a medley of familiar Christmas music. As the astronauts lament that they will not be on earth for Christmas this year, they soon learn that each has snuck aboard their favorite musical instrument.
The all-knowing space ship captain, portrayed by Gayel Pitchford, informs her crew that she hand-picked each of them for their musical, as well as aeronautical abilities. Thus, an impromptu concert is begun.
A short time later Mrs. Claus played by Carden School Director, Betty Gubler drops by and helps Santa deliver gifts to the encircling space crew.
The Flaming Bows have players ranging in ages from 9-13. Some have played for two, three, even four years, but the majority of the orchestra, including the cello section, have played only for about three months. They have worked long and diligently to learn enough to play in the orchestra’s 2007 Christmas Concert.
In addition to several instrumental solos and a singing solo by student Sara Rodon, it was a special delight when Pitchford, on guitar, and student Erica Solum, on violin, performed a beautiful rendition of Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire.
Of special note was young violinist, Steven Phillips’ solo performance of the “Marine Corp Hymn” for his brother PFC Adam Phillips who recently graduated from Marine Corp Boot Camp in San Diego. PFC Phillips is a 2006 graduate of Tehachapi High School.
