Teacher Scott Woods’ fifth grade class at Golden Hills Elementary got a quick lesson in professional stage make up as Jacob Neufeld magically “aged” in front of their eyes.
As part of a special class, Professor Doug Jockinsen explained the use of make up and a history going back to the Egyptians. The Egyptians painted their eyes to look like cat’s eyes. Native Americans used it as war paint, to look more fierce, and of course mom uses it to hide blemishes and even out the appearance of her skin.Whether it was the Egyptians, Native Americans or your mom, it’s main use is “to change the way you look.”
He told them that today in theater, TV and the movies make up is used to achieve a particular look to fit the part being played. Making some one look older, younger, happy or sad can be easily accomplished with a little professional make up.
After making up young Jacob, Jockinsen passed around various types of make up, latex, grease paint and powder to the class to let them see and get the feel of it close-up.
