Ruby Ethel Stone, mother of Robert O. Stone, of Tehachapi, David R. Stone, of Las Vegas, and George L. Stone, of Selva Beach, Calif., passed away in Bakersfield on Dec. 20, 2007 at the age of 98 and a half years.
Ethel was born in Tennessee in 1909, to David and Martha Jones, moving with her family to Texas in 1915.
She married Opal Stone in 1929, with whom she had three sons. The family moved to Fresno, Calif. in 1947.
Ethel was the sixth of eight children, and is preceded in death by all of them, as well as by one grandchild, and her husband, who passed away in 1961.
She is survived by her three sons and their spouses, Robert and Corinne, of Tehachapi, David and Chris, of Las Vegas, and George and Barbara, of La Selva Beach; as well as by nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Ethel is also survived by numerous relatives in Texas, as well as by several California relatives on the Stone side of the family.
As a child, Ethel was an independent, hardworking and stubborn little redhead, and she grew to be a strong-willed woman who was a strict disciplinarian as a parent, although tempered by love. She loved to laugh and dance, and had a rich social life. She helped see her family through The Depression by raising and canning many fruits and vegetables, and could prepare a delicious meal from a scant pantry. Her okra plants were as tall as her house and were a special source of pride. She was an accomplished seamstress, making almost all of her own clothing. Her sons remember the shirts she made for them as children, and the quilts she made with her mother and mother-in-law.
Twelve years ago, Ethel was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and her family moved her from Fresno to Bakersfield to an assisted living home. When she needed more care two and a half years ago, they transferred her to Parkview Julian Convalescent Hospital in Bakersfield, where she received loving care by a wonderful staff. After developing cancer in the fall of 2007, she was placed on hospice care as well.
Ethel had a mean “love pat,” and her children and grandchildren remember it well! Even in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, she could deliver her brand of “love” effectively! She was loved by all her caregivers in spite of, or perhaps because of, her orneriness, and truly loved them in return.
Arrangements were handled by Wood Family Funeral Service of Tehachapi, with a memorial service at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Tehachapi held on Dec. 27, followed by interment at Fresno Memorial Gardens where she rests beside her husband.
