Golden  Hills Elementary School students have been issued a hot challenge from Principal Pat Thomas for the Read Across America Celebration on March 2nd.

Read Across America is an annual tradition throughout the United States, honoring that icon of children’s literature, Dr. Seuss (or Theodor Seuss Geisel), whose birthday is March 2nd. If he were still alive, Dr. Seuss would be 104 years old this year. His crazy characters and poetic prose have delighted children throughout the world since 1937, when he published his first book, “And To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.”

At Golden HillsSchool in 2007, students read more than 2500 books, meeting the challenge and sending Miss Thomas (alias Clifford the Big Red Dog) to the doghouse for the day. Each student had to read at least one book in order to meet the challenge, but surprisingly enough, most students read 3 or more books during the 2-week period prior to March 2nd.  At the end of the celebration, each student was presented with a brand-new book of their very own, courtesy of the Golden Hills Student Council.

This year, Ms. Thomas guarantees she will do something equally fun and exciting for her students if they manage to fire themselves up and read at least 3000 books. The challenge begins on February 11th and concludes on February 29th, giving students plenty of time to discover what kind of books they can warm up with. GHPTO has generously taken up the cause and will present each student who reads at least one book with an age-appropriate book of their very own.

The challenge is heating up! Can Golden Hills students get FIRED UP FOR READING?
