This week's article will focus on the City of Tehachapi's Mission Statement.

“In an effort to build the premier community in which to live and do business, the city employees and city council will commit to work in concert with our citizens to maintain the highest professional and ethical standards possible; maintain quality in all areas of our performance; and continually raise the standards throughout our community, all in the goal of increasing the quality of life for our citizens.”

The Mission Statement of the City of Tehachapi is much more than contrived words or unattainable phrases. Rather, it is the foundation for all city endeavors.
It is no coincidence that the first value addressed in the city's Mission Statement is centered on the citizens of Tehachapi. As we make every effort to “work in concert with our citizens,” city employees and the city council are committed to open communication and government. Public participation is welcome and encouraged.
To ensure steady progress, the city must also “maintain the highest professional and ethical standards possible.”

Public works training, ethical training, and emergency operations training are a few examples of the ways in which the city strives to achieve the highest standards possible.

“Maintain quality in all areas of our performance” is exemplified in the financial performance of the city. Recent audits have shown that the city continues to be fiscally sound. With state and federal budget constraints looming, however, the city is preparing to meet possible future funding challenges. Measures are being taken to ensure the continued financial stability of the city.

We are also committed to “continually raising the standards throughout our community.” The recent update of the city's standards for development and the community-based General Plan Update raise the bar for current and future development.

I can not stress strongly enough that community involvement is essential to the successful implementation of the city's Mission Statement. We ask for your participation in working towards “the goal of increasing the quality of life for our citizens.”

I'm very concerned with the budget problems at the state and local levels that the move to form our own small local police department will be a costly mistake over the long term. Consolidating and streamling are the trends in successful corporations and goverment agencies.
