Golden Hills School was bustling with excitement on Feb. 20 during its annual Science Fair. There were approximately 250 projects brought in from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Teachers required every 4th and 5th grade student to submit a project as part of their science grade. Third graders were encouraged to participate, but were not required.

Twenty-two judges spent all morning evaluating each and every project for originality, understanding, organization, effort, and clarity. Nine adult judges from the community and eleven Tehachapi High School physics students teamed up by grade levels, and judging was completed by early afternoon.

An evening awards presentation was given to recognize the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners from each grade. Judges, teachers, and parents were quite impressed with the level of creativity and thoroughness from this year's projects.

Two outstanding projects were selected to be entered in the Kern County Regional Science Fair at the Robobank Arena on April 2. Zachary Haskell and Garrett Sebra were thrilled when they heard they were the ones going on to the county competition. Jay Jones also won for the top 4th grade project. Garrett turned old jeans into paper. Zachary improved reception for his wireless laptop using a parabolic mirror, and Jay proved that “Green bags” really do keep produce fresh longer.
