Deep and talented.
The varsity and junior varsity tennis programs this season are certainly that.
Tehachapi’s varsity program, spearheaded by a host of senior leadership, made quick work of visiting North-Bakersfield last Tuesday in an opening season victory. Tyler Thoms won 8-0, followed by David Croy 8-0, Ryan Grisso 8-0, and Taylor Buttcane 8-6 in singles to lead the Mountain Tennis victory.
Because the Warriors were playing the first match of the season, the Tehachapi squad elected to rotate players in at doubles after the impressive singles games.
“We did not keep score in doubles but they were competitive games,” said head coach John Bailey. “We mixed in players from both teams to keep the matches competitive. Had we have played our top players, I think it definitely would have not been competitive due to the difference in skill level.”
In junior varsity action, Tehachapi opened up their inaugural program match with a win over Antelope Valley by a 12-6 round-robin count.
Dan Gillam won two matches 6-3 and 6-2, followed by Austin Zehr (6-3, 7-5) and Joe Theisen (6-3, 6-4) in singles. Derrick Boutté and Luke Boyd teamed up to win in doubles 6-0 and 6-2, while Zech Maynard and Steve Pestance (6-4, 6-3) and Jonathan Johnson and Kevin Mendoza (7-5, 6-4) also won sets.
Both programs will take on Highland-Palmdale this Tuesday (varsity at home, junior varsity away) and Lancaster on the road on Thursday. Both matches will start at 3 p.m.
