The track and field team is off to a flying start, rolling to victories in the varsity and junior varsity boys and girls division against Bakersfield Christian High School last week.

Tehachapi High School’s varsity boys won 83-25, the varsity girls won 70-28, the junior varsity boys won 76-28, and the junior varsity girls won 66-6 to complete the sweep.

“It was the first meet of the year (for BCHS) so they were still getting their feet wet, so to speak,” said track head coach Ed Weaver. “But our group really did a great job and did what they needed to do to get the points and get the win.”

Highlighting the boy’s effort was first place showings by Josh Snider in the 1600-meter, 800-meter and long jump and Will Clark winning the 400-meter and 100-meter races. Alyssa Fechner won the 100-meter and 200-meter race, while Emily Leming won the 1600-meter and 3200-meter races to highlight the varsity girls effort.

In the junior varsity boys division, Tehachapi won every event except the 110 high hurdles, with Michael Minjares winning the 1600-meter and 800-meter races, Tyler Guyon taking a victory in the shot put and long jump, and Sergei Horowitz grabbing gold in the 200- and 400-meter races. Markie Wahlstrom won the long jump, 300 hurdles and 100 hurdles and Sarah Whitson took first the 1600- and 800-meter races to highlight the junior varsity girls effort.

“We’re off to a great start, we have a great coaching staff in place to help us out and we’re looking forward to having some success this season,” added Weaver.

Coaches for this year’s track team include Ed Weaver (head coach), Bob Papac (assistant head coach), Don Thomas (sprinting specialist), John Roemer (hurdle specialist), Mr. Cone (mechanics specialist) and Ralph and Thomas Turner (technical experts)

“We’re very fortunate to have Ralph and Thomas helping us out this year,” Weaver said. “Ralph is a retired physical education teacher who just moved to Tehachapi and his knowledge of track is limitless, while Thomas (Turner) is a former two-time state finalist. Overall, it’s a great group of coaches and just a great group of kids.”
