It was with such sadness that I read today of Bill Mead's passing. He and Betty were one of the top three reasons I moved to Tehachapi.
In 1992, Kern Council of Governments hired me as a Circuit Planner and two days each week I worked for Chris Grimes at Tehachapi City Hall. Each week I made a point of walking over to the Chevron station for a cold Pepsi and a hot-off-the-press Tehachapi News. I was beguiled by the small-town neighborliness and by the big-hearted warmth of its co-editors/publishers.
In 1993, I leased a house in Golden Hills and in 1995, I bought the house in Stallion Springs that I've called home ever since.
Besides the splendor of the Tehachapi Mountains and the thrill of four distinct seasons, it was Bill and Betty Mead who introduced me to this special piece of paradise.
I join Jon Hammond in thinking I wasn't ready to say good to Bill Mead, though I'm sure he will live on in everyone's heart who was ever charmed by his intelligence, wit, and warmth.
