Each spring, Golden Hills Elementary School holds a fourth grade camp at Mountain Park. Each year there are students who are qualified to go academically, but do not have enough funds to attend. Golden Hills School hopes for funds to be donated so that all eligible students will have the opportunity to go to camp. This year, the Knights of Pythias Kern Lodge 76 have decided to be the contributor that will sponsor some of these students’ camp experience.
The fourth grade camp experience is a day where students participate with teachers, parents and community volunteers in fun-filled learning activities. All the activities at the camp are designed to meet the needs of each student and to culminate a year’s study in science and social studies.
The teachers use this camp experience to teach their students the importance of responsibility and how to work as a team to reach a group goal. This camp also serves as a way to build student’s self-esteems. Students who may be shy and don’t shine in a classroom tend to come out of their shell. Students with behavior problems in the classroom are also successful at camp and parents are given the opportunity to learn alongside their child. The greatest part of this camp though, is how everyone comes away from the camp amazed that they can have fun and learn at the same time.
In Tehachapi, the Knights of Pythias Kern Lodge 76, show their support to local needs with their current contribution being made to the Golden Hills fourth grade camp.
