During the months of October through January, Carden students have been setting reading goals and enthusiastically reaching those goals. During the four months, students literally read hundreds of thousands of pages. Those reading the most in each class will find their names on the school's reading plaques and receive Barnes and Noble gift certificates. Super readers read over 5,000 pages. All participants making their goals are rewarded with a special movie field trip at the local Hitching Post Theater.
Scholastic Book Clubs began a program just after hurricane Katrina encouraging students to read and sign off on 100 books per classroom. When that goal has been reached, Scholastic sends 200 books to a school where students are not able to afford books. This year the eighth grade class at Carden, met their goal by reading 100 books in less than one week. They are ready for the next reading challenge and enjoy the competition.
